Week Wrap Up (4/4/2011-4/11/2011)

22 people showed up on the Saturday ride – we’re off to a great summer! Wait! It’s not summer yet! Sike! 14 showed on Sunday from Roscoe Village Bikes. Both days were fantastic rides and a great way to start the season.
Saturday was also the Sherman Park criterium and the Spidermonkey’s were there to represent!
“I am definitely ready to do the next one” says Chad after the race. John Castro did both 5A’s and 5B’s and reports: “The pack was twitchy being the first race of the day and first race ever for a good number of people there. A couple of crashes and one happened right next to me! Close call. Pace was good, however I dropped from the pack after Mike Cappello from RVB pushed the pace for one of the prime (preem) laps. Even after that I couldn’t even hold 20 mph (??), but suffered through and finished the race. While walking my bike right after, it seemed that my rear wheel was stuck and rubbing due to a severely loose and bent spoke. Doh! Luckily, Matt Daniels fixed it up and I was able to race the B’s. 5B’s: We had more Spidermonkey representation in the B’s: Chad Dunham, Peter Monko, Hayes Sanborn and myself. Crashes were a-plenty and Hayes didn’t go down, but got tangled up in one of them and lost the pack. Chad had to pull evasive maneuvers and ended up doing some off-road cyclocross action and then lost the pack. John flatted out with 3 laps to go. Peter, sitting in the pack the whole time took the prime lap and finished top ten!! Way to go!”
Lessons learned:
Stay near the front of the pack.
Avoid crashes.
Don’t flat out.
Don’t go off-road unless you’re on a mountain bike or cyclocross bike.
Stephanie reports: “The women’s 4’s had over 20 riders! When they called the first prime, a group of five women went for it and managed to stay off the front for the remainder of the race. I was in the second group and was able to take the sprint of that group for a 6th place finish. Lil V was in the third group and took her sprint for thirteeth. Overall, it was a very fun race” Lil V and Stephanie both got callouts for being in the top 10 of the Illinois Cup!
Great job and congratulations to everybody who raced!! Spidermonkey was also mentioned as being a rather new team and being known for drinking lots of beer. Dean was called out on that one (are we surprised??).

Congratulations to all Spidermonkey’s who completed the Shamrock Shuffle! Dean and Vanessa were out cheering you all on. Ryan was spotted killing it near the front. Castro got 511th. Way to go! Monica and Eric Goodwin were out helping sweep the course – thanks to all the bike marshal’s for helping out!
On Monday, a bunch of Spidermonkey’s made an appearance and actually ran at the monthly Burgers and Beer night at Universal Sole. Dean had a near record run! Yes, that’s right, Dean is a runner! Also, rumor has it that I-hate-running-Ken actually bought a pair of running shoes! Where were you Ken?
No, we are not a running club! (we all just secretly love it).
Our website has had a face lift…check it out!
This week: Training camp in Galena being put together by Brandon and Justeen. Sounds like there are a lot of Spidermonkey’s going…we can’t wait to hear about it! Thanks so much for putting this together!
Spidermonkey of the week: Justeen McNett

I started off biking in 2007 while Brandon started training for his first triathlon. He was on a borrowed road bike while I borrowed his sister’s Wal-Mart special mountain bike. I enjoyed riding but couldn’t keep up, so I decided it was time to get my own road bike. We moved to the city that summer and I occasionally rode the lakefront trail and did a few super-sprint triathlons. I didn’t enjoy biking because I had developed knee issues while riding longer distances and the bike just wasn’t very comfortable. By the end of summer the pain was unbearable and I had given up riding my bike.
Last fall I had Ken give me a bike fit at Get-A-Grip‘s fit studio which corrected my knee pain, and a new saddle made me want to spend hours on my bike. Now riding on the bike was less painful and much more fun.
However I was still missing something… friends to ride my bike with. After a summer of hanging out with the Spidermonkeys at bike races, the Summer BBQ, beer pouring at the Northwestern game, and after much persistence from Brandon, I realized I wanted to be back on the bike and ride with the Spidermonkeys. Now that I had my fit, I knew I needed to start training. Two years off the bike had left me in horrible shape, and I knew I needed to be fit to hang with the women on the Tuesday Morning Ride so I decided to sign up for the VQ training sessions. My new training regimen was put to the test in March with the first annual Spidermonkey Spring Training Camp in Vegas. It was tough, but I didn’t crack!
I still have a long way to go so I don’t continue getting dropped on group rides, but my confidence and abilities are growing. The Spidermonkey’s have me hooked on biking and by the end of the summer I can’t wait to look back at how far I’ve progressed. I’m looking forward to our first “Illinois” training camp in Galena this weekend and a ‘hopefully’ great rest of the year riding and getting to know some FANTASTIC people!

Week Wrap-Up (3/28/11 – 4/3/11)

If last week was chock-full of excitement on the bike, this week didn’t disappoint off of it.  Early in the week one of Spidermonkey’s biggest and most loyal sponsors, 312 beer, made big news with its own “win” as its parent, Goose Island, announced it was bought by A-B Inbev.  To all Spidermonkeys’ relief, Dean fielded a call from Goose Island where the message was loud and clear: Our relationship has helped fuel the company’s growth and nothing will change with our sponsorship!

Back on the bike, 19 of us showed up bright-eyed at 8am, with John Castro 10min late (naturally) for our Saturday jaunt to Highland Park. Trent, Mike Meyers and Liz were not among the group, as it seems Rebecca “had just put them to bed at 5am.”  Come one guys, haven’t you heard “what happens in Vegas (e.g. all night partying) stays in Vegas”?   Moving right along, the ride marked the debut for one of our newest members – welcome, Frederick Hartray; as well as Ken’s latest and greatest piece of equipment – new wheels; and Fred made a brief appearance on his new bike.

On the way up Damen the peleton stopped as Todd Kaiser and family were spotted out and about.  Todd let everyone know his collarbone surgery was set for this week and he seemed upbeat despite the early season setback.  Of course, Spidermonkey is doing its part to help keep Todd’s spirit (and form) up, as it was announced he was going to be able to ride at VQ while he recovers.

Between Bahai – Highland Park – Bahai, Drew showed the he’s still in great form winning several of the sprints, and when he didn’t it was because John Castro and Tim were there to keep him honest.

The action on the bike this week wasn’t constrained to the North Shore as Kristi and Little V raced at Hillsboro.  Great job Spidermonkey women!!!!

As we head further into April it means two things: 1 – The Cubs and Sox have begun their annual chase for anything but first place; and 2 – April 6 will be the first Wednesday night ride! Whether you’re a grizzled veteran or a young gun, this is the ride you’ve been waiting for.  And who can blame you?  Any ride that has been called “vomit inducing” and ends at the Chicago cycling hub, JJ Peppers has to be fun.  If you didn’t receive your “personal” invite from Bryan here are the basic details:  6 pm at Roscoe Village Bikes; Bring lights; John “Sudds” Lyon will be the evening’s leader and will provide full details, e.g. route and etiquette, before the ride rolls.
“I mean, you either love spinning the pedals and watching scenery whiz by, or you don’t. And if you love it, not much can sour you on the idea of riding your bike.” – Keith Mills

Weekly Wrap Up March 19th-26th

The road season is finally underway, and it was a very exciting week for the Monkeys with lots of racing!

Last Saturday we did our first “official” group ride, with our new default route, hitting University BEFORE the coffee shop. This is going to be a new standard, giving us an extra 7 miles.

The next day several Spidermonkey’s went out to Joliet for the Spring onto the Autobahn crit. For Stephanie Levine this race marked her first crit ever, and her first return to bike racing since college. Ken, Geoff Scott, Lil v, and Micheal Berman also went out to race in Joliet. You can look at USA Cycling for full results.

Then there were the Gaper’s Block crits! For Chad Dunham and Kelly Clarke this was their first racing experience. And Kelly dove right in, doing all FIVE of the crits. As she said on her facebook page, “Only came in last once my first week of racing. I’ll call that a success! Anyone would call that a success! Kristi, Vanessa B, Todd, and Mike Meyers also tested their legs down on the South Side.

To cap off what was already a great week, Saturday was the Spring Super Crit put on by our “Big Brothers” Burnham Racing along with ourselves. Lot’s of great results for the monkeys! To start the day off, Todd Kaiser WON the cat 5 race.  Todd got some help from his teammates,Tim Driver, Michael Meyers, Peter Tampa, Chad Dunham, John Castro, and Peter Monko. Geoff Scott was Spidermonkey’s lone contribution to the 4’s field. Now that a lot of you boys have gotten a taste of racing, let’s cat up fast and give Geoff some help!

Stephanie Levin, Kristi Hanson, Stewart Chapman and I were all in the women’s Cat 4 race. Actually it was Stewart’s first race, and because of the weather she almost balked, but she didn’t and ended up having a lot of fun.

All in all there were 6 top10’s and 10 top 20’s in 3 races! And lots of people came out just to volunteer, which is just HUGE! Dean and Vanessa want to extend a big big thanks to all those folks and also to Matt, Geoff Scott and Get-a-Grip for lending a hand with neutral support out there.

OK Spidermonkeys, bring it at the Super Crit this Saturday!

Week Wrap Up (3/11/11-3/20/11)

Last week marked a page in Spidermonkey history. Our first annual Spring training camp in Las Vegas! A quick summary:

  • 3 rides in 3 days
  • Almost 10,000 feet of climbing
  • 150 Miles
  • Hoover Dam, Hoover Dam again & Red Rock Canyon
  • Fiesta Casino All-You-Can-Eat $4.99 Buffet!!!!
  • Epic!
Check out the details here
Our last Get A Grip clinic (3 part series) was this week. Huge Success! We are so excited to have Get a Grip on board – they are proving to be a fantastic sponsor! We all learned so much and really appreciate the effort that Get A Grip put into this. Huge thanks to Geoff, Michael, and Matt for running the clinics. And thanks to the rest of the Get A Grip crew for making it happen!
Saturday rides are back…well for this week at least. 19 of us were itching to get out. It was cold but awesome. Even made our stop for hot dog’s at Budacki’s!  Some of the Spidermonkeys got an early start to racing too!  Here is a report from Ken (Shama-lama-ding-dong):

So the 2011 season begins.
For some reason Michael Berman, Geoff Scott and I decided to head up to a very
cold Pleasant Prairie Wisconsin for some early crit action. Also on hand was L’il V who raced earlier in the day getting a 3rd place. Very cool!
I think the best lesson learned would be not to park next to someone play very loud, very bad techno-pop music. Lesson two during early season races bring all your warm weather gear. You will need it.
Nothing very exciting during our race round and round no breaks, although a few folks tried. Most of the group stayed together and with 3 laps to go we came around and suddenly had one to go. Michael
moves closer to the front and is the first to come through the last turn to the finish. Unfortunately he was nipped at the line but still got third place. Mr. Scott was able to come across with 6th and I was able to make my way from the very back to sprint pass for a 14th place.
Feeling good about the week before we all again decided to race in Joliet. A nice race that takes place on a car race track, so a smooth surface with easy turns, joy!
Other Spidermonkeys on hand were again L’il V and Steph, who I believe was doing her first race in a long time. This one was a bit a a reality check as all that winter weight (at least for me) came to a head..ouch. During our Men’s 4 race we got lucky and the rain stopped and the sun made it’s first real appearance of the day. Not much to say really. Round and round again, this time we became more pack fodder then anything else, but hey it’s only March. Thanks to the South Chicago Wheelmen putting this one on and the Joliet Autobahn for opening their doors, indoor changing area and bar to us. We’ll be back next year!
Let’s hope for drier and warmer days for the rest of the 2011 season.

Congrats to Stephanie on her 7th place finish!!!!

Racing
What’s happening this week?
Good luck to all Spidermonkey’s racing!

“Hell of the West” Spidermonkey Spring Training Camp

It all began with a short trip to visit Dean’s parents in Las Vegas and a visit to J.T’s Bicycle Shop. Next thing we knew 8 spidermonkeys were embarking on a trip to Vegas for spring training. What followed was an epic 5 days of nonstop riding, eating, drinking and FUN!

After taking our private shuttle from the airport to the Fiesta Casino in Henderson (aka blue-haired-oxygen-tank-loose-slots-we-love-locals-hangout), we checked in and then hit the $4.99 all-you-can-eat buffet. We thought that would be the last we’d see of the grand buffet. Next, we picked up two necessities for our trip: player’s cards (aw yeah) and our bikes. We wanted to be fresh for the ride in the morning, so this was our first and last attempt at a good night’s sleep.

Day 1 (link to garmin): up bright and early and on our bikes. J.T. led us to the start where there were about 30 local’s from Green Valley Cyclists and Las Vegas Bike Club ready to show us what Vegas riding was all about. Pretty quickly we were doing lots of climbing and going down massive switch back hills. We were thrilled when we finally reached the Hoover Dam. At this point, we had covered almost 40 miles and 2000 feet of climbing. Hoover Dam was a beautiful place to stop and take pictures and admire the new access bridge recently completed. Little did we know, we were about to climb up another steep climb to admire it from ON the new bridge! It started to occur to us that the Vegas crew might be trying to rip our legs off! We crossed both Hoover Dam bridges twice before finally heading back home. 4 hours, 60 miles and 3750 feet of climbing on our first day! EPIC!

A few miles away from the hotel and we were famished. Fiesta’s $4.99 buffet sounded like a dream come true. Using our VIP passes and player’s cards, we were hooked up with a table right away. At this point, the only thing that would’ve made our lives better is to lay in our bed’s while eating instead of sitting in chairs. But we suffered through and then headed to the ice cold pool where we soaked our legs and piri formis’s.

Vegas Strip here we come! This was Rebecca’s first time! Our experiences included seeing the mall in Cesar’s Palace, mall in Planet Hollywood, Trent gambling, crazy expensive drinks, photo-hand slapping dudes on the street, scantily clad dancers, and dancing water fountains. When it was time to head home, we did it vegas style and stretch limo’d it.

Day 2 (link to garmin): We hit the bikes again vowing that we would not eat at the buffet afterwards. This time, we did the same route but not all the way to Hoover Dam. It was beautiful! We loved it and we loved the group we were riding with. J.T. was the best ride leader ever! He took us on a ride around Las Vegas Lake where Celine Dion lives. We love you Celine! We hope she heard us. This amazing ride was 50 miles and 2500 feet of climbing. Cake!

We just couldn’t resist the all-you-can-eat $4.99 buffet AGAIN! After repeating the ice cold pool, we got ready for our big night on the town. We headed to T(reasure)I(sland) to see the Cirques du Soleil (Mystere). A lot of firsts and the show did not disappoint…incredible! Afterwards, we got into party mode, forgetting that we had to get up for another grueling ride in the morning. Before it was too late, our voice of reason stepped in to save us from ourselves. Thank you voice of reason.

Day 3 (link to garmin): As Liz says, the next day was our “best idea ever!” ride. We drove out to Red Rock and started the ride with JT and a few local riders. It started out uphill…and we were feeling rough. It continued uphill for at least 10 miles. We did everything to try and keep moving. Songs, pushes from Josh, Dave Noda in our heads telling us to pedal full circles, etc. Once we made it to the top of Red Rock (4700 feet), we stopped for a mini celebration. It was downhill from here into Blue Diamond. This ride was such a treat!

Afterwards, we stopped at JT’s Bicycle Shop to return the bikes and down some pizza. We can’t say enough nice things about JT and his shop. Everything exceeded our expectations. He set us up with fantastic bikes, had everything we needed at his bike shop, his bike shop was convenient, he led all the rides for us, and JT himself is top notch! We are so glad we got to know him. Next time you’re in Vegas, we highly recommend stopping by his shop.

After some ice cold pool time, we headed to Dean’s parents for an Okun BBQ. Gil really knows how to BBQ! Pretty quickly the Spidermonkey’s started up a drinking game. We were on cloud 9 and needed to celebrate our 3 days of “Hell of the West” riding. 150 miles of amazing roads, scenery, riding friends and over 10,000 feet of climbing!!! After the BBQ, we headed to Green Valley Ranch and drunk dialed Stewart (as requested). To our delight, the casino had Beer Pong games going and some of us jumped right in. Turns out the Spidermonkey’s are pretty good at Beer Pong with the exception of Josh who says “I can’t play games with balls”.

We had so much fun, we didn’t want it to end. Alas, it was time to leave and what a sad flight home. But what a terrific group of people and a great group of rider’s! Not only did our legs hurt on the way home, but our mouths and stomach’s from so much laughing. You are all amazing people and we can’t wait to do this trip again! Epic!

Pictures here:
Some of our favorite quotes:
Mike: “Do you have a little captain in ya?” (to Dean’s Mother)
Justeen: “That’s the fastest I’ve ever ridden!”
Trent: “This drink tastes like vacation!”
Liz: “I’m taking away all of Josh’s gold stars. And giving them to Justeen.”
Dean: “I wish I could lay down while eating the buffet.”
Vanessa: “On your left! On your left! I need speed!”
Rebecca: “Amazing! Fantastic! Incredible! Awesome!”
Josh: “You’re all dead to me. Except for Trent.”

Week Wrap-up (2/19-2/27)

I wanna go fast!

With winter coming to an end soon (we hope!), several Spidermonkeys were anxious to get outside.  12 of us rolled out of Roscoe Village Bikes last Saturday for our first outdoor group ride of 2011.  Start time called for 9:00am by John Castro, who showed up late of course! (guess he hit snooze button on all three of his alarm clocks)  The coffee shop in Highland Park was excited to see us back for another season! Hot coffee and Orange muffins warmed our hearts while we warmed our toes.  Lots of new potholes on the route but only 1 flat! Dean showed off his flat changing skills that he learned while riding in Alaska. “Can’t take longer than 3 minutes or you get frost bite” he said.  Clearly everyone has been working hard over the winter months to stay in shape.  Look for Stephanie Levin to have a great race at the Spring Super Crit…she looks in good early season form!

This week is the start of the Spidermonkey “taste of” Vision Quest third and final session of this season.  Our performance test this past Thursday night proved what we all expected….Nate Iden is a beast!  Look for him to dominate the early spring races, including our co-sponsored race with Burnham Racing, the Spring Super Criterium.  Everyone of us, 20 in all, improved from our last performance test.  Thanks to Dave “Frank the Tank” Noda of VQ.  Seems the Spidermonkeys not only like to socialize together, we also like to suffer through training together.  Thanks for making the winter months fly by!

4 years and we keep getting better (looking)!!!  With 69 of us wearing the 2011 kits, we are sure to brighten up the streets of Chicago.  Look (out) for Ken Mitchell sporting his skinsuit.  A huge thank you to the 312/Goose Island designers for their help with this years design.  Look for our new 312/Spidermonkey tent at upcoming races too!

A HUGE welcome to our new sponsors for 2011.  Get A Grip Cycles and Bike MS!!!!  Already both new sponsors have shown us what a great partnership this is going to be.  Our goal is to raise at least $10,000 for MS this year.  Already 15 Spidermonkeys have committed to riding the Tour de Farms Bike MS ride in June!!!  We hope many more of you will join us for this amazing experience.  2 days of beautiful roads.  Beer pouring for 312 at the finish of day 1.  We quickly become everyones best friends!!!! You won’t believe how well organized this ride is.  Don’t miss out, sign up today!!!

A Huge thanks to Get A Grip Cycles for putting together a series of Spidermonkey Clinics.   Last weeks Basic Clinic was a huge success!  Only one tube exploded!!!  Ken showed off his dust removal technique. Kim found out that even Ken can’t get some bikes clean Next week maybe he will show us how he keeps his bar tape so clean.  This Wednesday, March 2nd at 6:30, will be the second in the series.  Intermediate Bike Maintenance Clinic. Hope you can make it.

Spring Super Criterium!  25 Spidermonkeys have volunteered to help us make this the best race of the season!  Already 8 Spidermonkeys are planning on racing too!!!!  This is a great race to get your feet wet if you are new to racing.  Wide course, no potholes and sweeping turns.  If you have racing questions, please let us know and we will put you in touch with our “I wanna go fast!” group of race leaders who include Vanessa “Lil V” Buccella, Brandon Diffenderfer, Geoff Scott and Ken Mitchell.  We encourage everyone to give it a try.  Racing is not for everyone…but who knows, you might be the next Cat nothing at all to a Cat 1 racer.  Boogety, Boogety, Boogety, Lets Go Racin!

In the coming months look for “Spidermonkey of the week”, “Sponsor of the Month” and several new Spidermonkey Blog contributors.    If you are interested in writing the weekly wrap-up, please let us know.  So far we have 5 volunteers that will alternate.
